Hello, gang! I had a great time watching and discussing God Grew Tired of Us at the first movie club meeting. Some of those scenes really have stayed with me, and I had never even heard of the movie before.

Our next meeting will be March 28th, and it's my turn to offer the choices. Here are the discussion-worthy nominations:

The Visitor

The Visitor
is a recent drama about a college professor who is drifting through life until he encounters an immigrant couple who moved into his New York apartment while he was away. Richard Jenkins was nominated for a the Best Actor Oscar for his performance. This was one of my favorites of 2008.

Becket

Becket is a classic from 1964 that deserves to be much better known than it is. The story of King Henry II and Archbishop Thomas Becket, it mixes comedy and drama with potent reflections on leadership, service and honor. It was nominated for 12 Oscars, including Best Actor awards for both Peter O'Toole and Richard Burton. Recently restored, it was finally released on DVD a couple of years ago.

About a Boy

About A Boy is the most familiar of the three choices. The 2002 Hugh Grant comedy based on Nick Hornby's novel is a very funny movie, but also has some moments of real grace and connection.

I've given you links to each film's webpage and its "Rotten Tomatoes" page up above. Click around, choose the one you think has the best discussion potential, and vote for it in the poll!

(By the way, I don't think that my selections were influenced by the fact that Sandy and are about to be visited by a boy named Aidan Becket, but the brain works in funny ways.)

I somehow managed to put the first post on here and then it took me approximately two and a half millennia to find the reply button on the bottom left to post again. Yes, I've been searching for it since the time of Socrates.

And now I've forgotten what I was going to say. But, hey! We're all tied up! This is better than the Superbowl!
